Asus PG258Q In-Depth Review

Image Quality

The Asus PG258Q supports 1920 x 1080 FHD resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, TN panel, 1000:1 contrast ratio and 400 cd/m² brightness. It offers surprisingly good overall image quality for a TN-paneled gaming monitor.

Colors look accurate; it displays good contrast and viewing angles.

The accuracy of the colors faces a little problem as the bright colors may look slightly off, but this is a common problem with the TN panel.

The Asus PG258Q is blindingly bright at 80%, but this won’t be no longer a problem when ULMB is used as it reduces the brightness greatly.

If you choose to reduce the brightness instead of using ULMB this will affect the contrast ration and reduce it as well. But for TN panels that result is still within acceptable standards.

The TN panel seems to always suffer from poor contrast ratio and viewing angles, but in the Asus PG258Q retains more detail in darker areas and exhibits a less color shift to the sides. The grey colors may seem slightly reddish, but overall it’s a nice improvement.

The Asus PG258Q is a really responsive monitor as it comes with the fastest lag input and rapid 1ms response time, so ghosting isn’t really much of an issue in fast-paced scenes.

The 240Hz refresh rate gives a clear image and the performance of the screen was smooth and fluid.
In addition, it has G-Sync technology that will provide fantastic all-round gaming experience.

Tear-free, crisp and clear; gamers will feel like they have an advantage over lesser monitors.

Unfortunately, you can only use G-sync when ULMB is disabled. So it comes down to choosing one of them whether you want ULMB at 144Hz with a clearer image or G-Sync at 240Hz with faster gameplay.

It’s up to the gamer to choose, which mode he prefers a clear image, but slightly slow performance or faster performance and less clear image.

The Asus PG258Q is equipped with top features that vary from gaming to exclusive to standard. For starters, it comes with G-Sync technology that eliminates screen tearing and stuttering as well as ensures a smooth gaming experience.

It also comes with Ultra Low Motion Blur technology to make objects in motion look sharper, so gameplay is more fluid and responsive.

The Asus PG258Q offers gaming features such as GamePlus hotkey which provides in-game enhancements like a crosshair overlay, an onscreen timer, frames per second counter, and a display alignment function.

Along with GameVisual Technology that offers six display mode presets to optimize visuals like RTS /RPG, FPS, sRGB, scenery, Racing and cinema.

In addition, the PG258Q has Ultra-Low Blue Light Technology to protect the eyes from harmful blue light. It also has Flicker-Free Technology that helps reduce on-screen flicker, giving a more comfortable gaming environment.

Design and Connectivity

For The Design, the Asus PG258Q features a sleek and cool design with its black matte plastic finish, copper accents, and a stand with an LED projector below. The Asus Silver logo is planted at the bottom bezel as well as at the back of the monitor with a classic finish.

The screen has a nice thin bezel around all four sides.

The power LED is tucked under the bottom right edge of the screen and is hard to see from a normal viewing position. This glows white during screen operation and amber in standby.

The back of the screen is finished with a matte black plastic as well and the stand connects into the VESA 100mm compliant mounting section which has some copper colored plastic trim.

There is a red ROG Swift branding logo on the back of the stand.

The stand provides a three-pronged metal base which offers a wide and steady base.

There’s a cable tidy hole in the back of the stand where cables can pass through. For ergonomics, the Asus PG258Q can easily tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjusted.

As for Connectivity, the Asus PG258Q has limited connections as it has one DisplayPort, one HDMI input for video, and 2 USB 3.0 hubs. Also, a headphone jack but no built-in speakers.

The annoying thing about the connectivity in Asus PG258Q is that they are placed under a plastic cover behind the screen. Which make it quite hard to handle as the cover must be removed first before plugging anything and it’s hard to reach for as well.
