Asus PG278QR Review – A 165Hz Gaming Monitor With G-Sync

The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278QR is a new and updated version of the Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q; this high-end gaming monitor uses a 27-inch TN panel with a QHD (2560×1440) resolution, and features NVIDIA’s G-Sync adaptive refresh rate technology along with a base refresh rate of 144Hz that can be overclocked to 165Hz.

In addition, it has an extra HDMI 1.4 and an audio line-out port.

Asus PG278QR ReviewThe Asus PG278QR sports a 27-Inch TN panel with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and 1000:1 contrast ratio. The TN panel used is considered to be one of the best TN panels out there and that’s because of 8-bit interface.

The sRGB coverage sits at 99% with some minor under coverage in greens, but that is kind of expected from TN panels.

The Asus PG278QR’s contrast is good as it varies from 880:1 to 920:1 depending on brightness, which is at 385cd/m2. Accuracy is excellent at DeltaE 1.2, but it can be perfected to DeltaE of .6 with the help of calibration.

Of course the viewing angles of the TN panel aren’t really perfect as slight color shift can be noticed from certain angles, but that won’t be much of an issue for gamers.

Performance:

The Asus PG278QR sports 165Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. Unlike the previous version which only had 144Hz. If users who purchase this monitor has NVIDIA graphics card they will be able to synchronize the frame rates of the monitor with the GPU using the G-Sync feature.

Then they will be able to overclock the monitor’s Hz rate up to 165Hz and achieve a more stable FPS rate. And that will result in, low input lag and no screen tearing even at the maxed out settings.

However, if users don’t have NVIDIA graphic card, but some other cards they can enable Ultra Low Motion Blur feature that will help them improve the performance and they will suffer less from blurring or ghosting.

The ROG Swift PG278QR incorporates NVIDIA G-SYNC display technology to deliver smooth and fast performance. G-SYNC synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU, eliminating screen tearing and stuttering.

It offers GameVisual Technology, which has six preset display modes (scenery, racing, cinema, RTS/RPG, FPS, sRGB) to optimize visuals for different types of content.

This can be easily accessed through a hotkey or the OSD menu.

The ROG Swift PG278QR comes with the Ultra-Low Blue Light filters to reduce harmful blue light. As well as Flicker-Free technology that also reduces flicker to give a comfortable gaming experience. It minimizes instances of eyestrain and other damaging effects.

The ROG Swift PG278QR has Smart Vent Design, which is a custom heat sink that makes sure the monitor stays cool during marathon gaming sessions.

Plus, it has GamePlus feature, which allows users to fix four different types of crosshairs on screen and thus gain the edge over other opponents. Moreover, a timer and an FPS counter can be placed on the screen.

In addition, the Asus PG278QR has standard presets also such as Scenery, Cinema, sRGB and User modes for the improved movie watching experience and a higher color detailed image.

Design and Connectivity:

The Asus PG278QR has a nice matte black finish that gives the monitor its sleek and modern look.

The base of the monitor is also coated with a black color and has a red glowing ring in it. The bezels of the Asus PG278QR are quite thin and the side bezels are impressively thin giving a whole sleek look to the monitor.

The Asus silver logo sits at the bottom bezel and the OSD buttons are placed on the on the right backside of the monitor and include a power button, a button for the GamePlus feature, and a 5-axis joystick for quick and easy navigation through the menu.

The Asus PG278QR offers a wide range of ergonomic, it can be tilted, height adjusted, pivoted into portrait position and swiveled left or right. Additionally, the monitor is VESA mount compatible.

As for connectivity, The Asus PG278QR monitor features an HDMI 1.4 port and the DisplayPort 1.2 for the NVIDIA G-Sync feature. Also, there are two USB 3.0 ports and an audio line-out port.
